Several years ago I had the opportunity to attend the Institute for 21st Century Leadership. As a part of that community, we discussed the future and what schools should look like to prepare students for that future. The impact that institue had on me was profound and perhaps the most moving concept was one that looked how much technology and learning has changed over the last century but how little the classroom has changed. Globaloria is helping to change this at Pressley Ridge White Oak.
We brought Globaloria to our school this past summer. It fit in very nicely with the model we were implementing including emphasis of 21st Century skills. However, the transition to the new model did not occur as quickly as I would have liked. A shortage of staff and materials slowed the implementation and the beginning of the program, and other roadblocks impeded progress; nonetheless, we are on our way.
The roadblocks encountered are due to the nature of the school and the dangers of social networking. Many of the sites that we need to utilize for the program are considered dangerous for classrooms and have been prohibited for student use, but, I am hoping the students will see the beneficial aspects of such sites through their use and utilize the programs appropriately.
